If you’re planning to start your teaching career in the UK or internationally, the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is one of the most effective and recognized routes. This blog covers everything you need to know — from course types to costs, entry requirements, and career options — brought to you by EduGlobe Visas.
What is a PGCE and Why Study for One?
A PGCE is a postgraduate-level academic qualification that leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) — the certification required to teach in UK schools. It combines theoretical learning with real-world teaching placements, typically making it the top choice for aspiring educators.
It’s worth 60 credits at master’s level and can even act as a foundation for further study, such as a full master’s degree in education. Unlike other postgraduate certificates, a PGCE includes hands-on teaching experience, making it a practical and rewarding path into teaching.
Types of PGCE Courses
You can choose a PGCE based on the age group or subject you want to teach:
- Early Years PGCE (Ages 3–7)
- Primary PGCE (Ages 5–11)
- Secondary PGCE (Ages 11–16/18)
- Post-16 & Further Education PGCE (College level)
Additionally, you’ll select between:
- University-led PGCE – Includes theoretical education on campus + school placements (24 weeks minimum).
- School-led PGCE – Immediate school immersion and peer-based learning from in-service teachers.
Duration & Start Times
- Full-time PGCE: 1 academic year
- Part-time PGCE: 2 academic years
Most PGCE courses begin in September or October.
Entry Requirements
Here’s what you’ll typically need to apply:
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a teaching subject)
- GCSE Grade C/4+ in English and Maths
- GCSE Science (if applying for a Primary PGCE)
- IELTS score of 6.0+ if English is not your first language
- School or college experience in the UK
- Medical fitness declaration
- DBS (criminal background check)
Note: Entry can be competitive — having relevant experience and subject knowledge gives you an edge.
PGCE Costs
- UK/EU students: £9,250
- International students: £11,000 – £16,000
Keep in mind: PGCE placements are unpaid and there may be additional costs like travel, materials, and living expenses.
PGCE Funding Options
You can fund your PGCE through:
- Government postgraduate loans (tuition + maintenance)
- Scholarships and bursaries (subject or university-based)
- Private loans or self-funding
Some subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Maths offer special bursaries to attract more teachers.
Career Options After a PGCE
A PGCE prepares you to teach in the UK and internationally. You’ll be eligible for teaching positions aligned with your course’s subject and age range.
Many graduates are offered jobs at the schools they trained in — and there’s a strong demand for PGCE-qualified teachers across the UK.
High-Demand PGCE Subjects
If you want the best job prospects (and often better funding), consider these shortage subjects:
- Maths
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Computer Science
- Languages (French, German, Spanish)
- Geography
When to Apply
Applications usually open a year in advance. For September intake, it’s best to apply as early as possible — ideally between October and January of the year before.
Applications may close early once spots are filled, so don’t wait too long!
PGCE Grading
PGCEs are mostly graded through practical observations and written assignments — no traditional exams.
Courses are often marked on a pass/fail basis. However, if you extend your PGCE into a full master’s degree, grading follows:
- Distinction: 70%+
- Merit: 60–69%
- Pass: 50–59%
- Borderline: 40–49%
